I read an article recently about the perils of accepting a counteroffer by your employer. The author in question went on to suggest that it can be “career suicide” suggesting that it simply allows companies to buy some time to line up your replacement! This perhaps is a little harsh, but I have to agree in principle that in all of my experience, with very rare exception, does the counteroffer ever work out longer term for the candidate and on average most are back in the market within 6-9 months. And the reason? Well usually because the core reason for wanting to leave your employer has not gone away and whilst an uplift in salary can do wonders for short term morale, longer term the niggling issues come back and haunt, except this time they are magnified. What about in your experience? It would be great to hear your personal experience on this…
